About Citra

What is Citra?

Citra is a work-in-progress Nintendo 3DS emulator started in early 2013. Citra can currently emulate, with varying degrees of success, a wide variety of different homebrew applications and commercial software.

What is Citra’s License?

Citra is an open-source project, licensed under the GPLv2 (or any later version). Refer to the license document for more information.

Who made Citra?

Citra has an active team of open-source developers. Over 150 people have worked hard on the project since its founding in 2014! The list of contributors can be found on GitHub.

Concert and Alpine zithers

A concert zither may have from 29 to 38 strings, with 34 or 35 being most typical. These are arranged as follows: four or five fretted melody strings, placed above a guitar-like fretboard; 12 unfretted «accompaniment» strings; followed by 12 unfretted «bass» strings; followed by a varying number of «contrabass» strings, with five or six being the most common number.

On some older zithers, one may find «half-frets» above the 12th fret, which extend only under the first two or three strings. This results in the lower fretted strings having no pitches (or no chromatic pitches) available above the 12th fret, while the higher fretted strings still have higher chromatic pitches available at these half-frets. Nearly all instruments made after 1960, however, have full-length frets all the way up the fretboard.

Anton Karas and Ruth Welcome used instruments of similar design to the one illustrated. After World War II, Karas (according to zither scholar Günter Wittenstein, who was acquainted with him) performed on an instrument of larger dimensions than normal – with a 43 cm standard scale length for the fingerboard strings. He used Viennese tuning (see below), but with an altered chromatic sequence for the fingerboard and open strings. The accompaniment strings G and F♯ were tuned an octave higher, while contrabass strings tuned E♭, F, D, E, C♯ replaced the regular cycle of fifths bass strings. This brought the contrabasses closer to the fingerboard where the player could reach them more easily.

For The Third Man, Karas tuned the zither a semi-tone lower, giving a particularly distinctive tone to the contrabass strings. The resulting lower string tension also enabled Karas to perform an expressive vibrato on the fingerboard melody strings. Film director Carol Reed, (on whose oak kitchen table the music was performed), described the sound as «gritty and dirty», perfectly reflecting the atmospheric mood of the film.

The Alpine zither has 42 strings, and differs from the concert zither primarily in requiring the addition of an extension to the body of the instrument to support both the longer additional contrabass strings and their tuners.

Alpine zithers are tuned in a similar manner to the concert zither, with the accompaniment and bass strings each providing a full set of 12 chromatic pitches also arranged in a cycle of fifths. Contrabass strings are arranged in a descending chromatic scale. Late 19th and early 20th century versions of the instrument were often called ‘harp zithers’ – so-named because the pillar extension seemed a miniature version of the harp’s pillar. The extra contrabass strings ran parallel to the other strings on these earlier instruments, the diagonal arrangement illustrated developed later to assist the right hand in reaching the strings.

There are two popular tunings for the modern zither: Munich and Viennese. The zither tuning chart below, gives tuning details, including pitches and octaves. Munich tuning is on top, and Vienna tuning below. Some players have used Vienna tuning only for the fretted strings, and Munich tuning for the unfretted strings. Full Viennese tuning is normally used only on instruments with 38 or fewer strings.

Running games in Citra

Citra does not natively run dumps of games that have not been decrypted properly (unless you have dumped your own system keys). This requires a physical 3DS and the game you own.

Can Citra run Pokémon games?

All Pokémon games now work properly. Pokémon X/Y now runs properly with HLE audio as well as LLE audio. Linux users building from source need to take a look at Building for Linux for building with the AAC audio decoder.
Some Pokémon games might require System Archives dump in order to be able to prevent some issues.

Can Citra run ?

Citra can, ostensibly, “play” many different games now and more will become playable as development progress further. Some games/apps, however, will not load at all – only showing a black screen. Others, might only show the title screen and then freeze or crash.

Note that many games also require certain files to be dumped from a 3DS console. See below for information about files that can be dumped from a 3DS console and used by Citra:

You can expect many games to run slowly, though and to exhibit some gameplay and graphical glitches.

If you’re interested in 3DS emulation as an experiment, you may gain something out of trying Citra, but if you’re simply looking to play games then stick to your 3DS handheld.

Are you planning to make an Android version?

Yes. It has been official released and can be downloaded via https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.citra.citra_emu

Can I expect Citra to play at full-speed?

Citra can run most games at variable speed, depending on your hardware configuration.
However, not all games are created equally and therefore some games will run at full speed while others might suffer from slow emulation. You may also experience some slowdowns.

Note: The speed of will depend on the single-core performance of your processor. Refer to your CPU benchmark in this graph. If it’s below score of 1,800 the might not be playable at decent speeds.

Also, it has been reported that using the integrated Intel GPU on laptops has shown major performance increased in emulation speed. Only some games will benefit from it. This also applies for other emulators as well. Feel free to test both integrated and dedicated GPU to see which one gives you the best performance.

runs way too fast, how can I slow down the emulation?

Recent versions have a framerate limiter built-in. It can be toggled in the configuration, reachable through the Menu (citra-qt): “Emulation” > “Configure…” > “General” > “Limit Framerate”.

I saw a YouTube video about , why doesn’t it work on the nightly build?

Alternative custom branches may have not been merged into master. We only support nightly builds based on the master branch.
Unofficial builds are not supported. There may be other branches that are planned to be merged, but must go through vetting first to ensure they are good contributions to the project long term.

Where can I download games to use with Citra?

Short answer: You don’t. Buy games and dump them with a Nintendo 3DS.

Long answer: Downloading commercial games is illegal and thus strongly frowned upon by the Citra developers. To prevent legal issues, this includes gray areas like downloading games which you purchased earlier. You don’t necessarily need to own a 3DS yourself, as you can buy game cartridges and dump them with a friend’s console. On the other hand, copying a friend’s game dump is considered illegal. Please note that any mention or discussion of piracy on our forums or Discord channels will result in being banned from our community.

Playing techniques

The zither is played by plucking the strings while it lies flat on a table (which acts as a resonator to amplify the sound), or it can be held on the lap.

On concert and Alpine zithers the melody strings are pressed to the fingerboard («fretted») with the fingers of the left hand, and plucked with a plectrum on the right thumb. First and second fingers of the right hand pluck the accompaniment and bass strings, and the third finger of the right hand plucks the contrabass strings (there are variants on this technique).

The concept of the chord zither is different from that of the concert and alpine zithers. These instruments may have from 12 to 50 (or more) strings, depending on design. All the strings are played open, in the manner of a harp. The strings on the left are arranged in groups of three or four, which form various chords to be played by the left hand. The strings to the right are single (or pairs of) strings intended for the right hand to pick out the melody. Tuning can vary widely from manufacturer to manufacturer and even from model to model, but is usually indicated on the instrument itself, in the form of chart painted or glued under the strings.

Fate

At the end of the game, she will try to convince Jason to stay on the island and stay the warrior he has become. She captures his friends before finally sedating Jason himself with a natural drug in powder form. He finds himself awake at Citra’s hands while she continues to try to convince him to stay.

The drug that Citra gives him walks him through a shameful high feeling, which twists how his allies feel about him, telling Jason that he is a selfish person and a maniac. Citra gives constant reassurances along the way that this will never happen to him, the «true» warrior, and to accept his final tatau which will make him a man.

Jason, at the end of the hallucination, finally accepts the tribal knife which is offered by her. He is suddenly put back into reality where he finds out that he is holding a knife to Liza Snow’s neck. There is a moment of hesitation where she pleads for her life, which gives the player two choices. ‘Join Citra’ or ‘Save your Friends’.

Join Citra

‘Joining Citra’ leads to Jason slitting Liza’s throat. The rest of the group will also be killed, but only Liza’s death is seen. Citra will then tell the Rakyat warriors to «Prepare the Tatau». The screen fades to black. Jason is then seen having sexual intercourse with Citra in a ritual. Upon finishing, Citra stabs Jason in the chest. As Jason bleeds out, Citra reassures her chosen mate that she will give birth to their child, who will command the destiny of the Rook Islands and the Rakyat people as the ‘Perfect Warrior’. As the screen is fading out as Jason dies, Citra tells Jason he is a warrior and should die a warrior and whispers «You won» right before the game ends. The credits then roll.

Save your friends

‘Saving your Friends’ leads to Jason cutting the rope Liza is tied to, then untying Daisy, who then unties the rest of the group. Citra pleads for him to join her, saying that he cannot go back and that the jungle is his true home, adding «they will move on, have kids and boring lives». Jason says he’s done and there will be no blood. Dennis angrily runs in with a knife and berates Jason for «betraying» Citra’s goddess love and yelling that she saved him and everyone else in the tribe. He lunges at Jason with the knife, but Citra suddenly jumps in front of him as Jason backs away, causing Dennis to accidentally stab her in the stomach. Jason lays her on the ground and holds her in his arms as she bleeds to death. While bleeding out, Citra expresses her love for Jason and pleads for him not to leave her, to which Jason replies with «I’m sorry», after which Citra dies. Dennis begins to weep and apologize for stabbing Citra. The scene cuts to a view of one of Rook Island’s beaches with Jason’s final monologue in the background:

«I’ve killed so many people I’ve lost count. I can’t come back from this. I’m a monster. I can feel the anger inside me. But I am still, somewhere inside me, more than that. Better than that.»

The boat that Daisy fixed is seen leaving the island as Jason condemns what he had to become to save his friends. The credits then roll.

Etymology

The word ‘zither’ is derived from Latin cythara, which was used in this form for the title covers on many 16th and 17th century German printed manuscript books originally for the ‘cittern’ – from the Greek word kithara, an instrument used in Ancient Greece. The German scholar Michael Praetorius mentions an Englishman who came to Germany with a small cittern, einem kleinen Citterlein, in his treatise Syntagma Musicum, published during the early 17th century. It is not fully understood how ‘zitter’ or ‘zither’ came to be applied to the instruments in this article as well as German varieties of the cittern. Other types of zither also existed in Germany, mostly drone zithers like the scheitholt (which was mentioned by Praetorius) or hummel, but these generally have their own individual regional names and may have been in use before the introduction into the lexicon of ‘cythara’ and its German derivative cognate.

How can I develop or contribute to the project?

If you’re interested in contributing, fork the project here in GitHub, and then create a Pull Request when you’re ready to submit your contribution. Unless your change is trivial, however, it is strongly recommended that you join our development channel (#citra-dev @ Freenode) to coordinate with the developers beforehand. Make sure to review our coding guidelines and ensure your changes follow them. If you’re looking for ideas on things to work on, try looking around our issue tracker. Some issues are tagged with the E-easy label, which means they’re smaller tasks that should be easier to get into.

I’d like to be a beta tester, how can I help?

If you try some games and run into issues like graphical glitches, freezes and especially regressions from previous versions, you can try reporting them in our issue tracker, accompanied by logs from the emulator if possible. Do not report an issue if a game simply fails to boot entirely.

Most non-official builds are just a collection of different features currently being worked on by Citra contributors from the community.
These features are not part of the official version (yet) because they are either broken-by-design and would possibly hinder development soon or because they are still work in progress.
Also, each change will go through a review process. Features found in non-official versions are often in the review phase already and will be included in official versions about a month or two later.

If you are the author of a non-official build make sure you still follow the license of Citra.

Легенда о жетыгене

После утраты последнего младшего сына Кияса старик натягивает седьмую струну и исполняет кюй «Жети баламнан айрылып куса болдым» («Горе от утраты семи сыновей»).

Извлекая из инструмента звуки полные скорби, исполнитель в различных по характеру мелодиях показывает образы своих детей. Эти импровизированные мелодии получили дальнейшее развитие и дошли до нас в форме инструментальных пьес-кюев под общим названием «Жетыгеннын жетеуы» («Семь кюев жетыгена»).
